Gunter Alberts, Age:89

Gunter A. Alberts, age 89, of Clarendon Hills, IL, died on Monday, October 23, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in 1934 to the late Peter and Judith Ifkowitsch in Dillingen, Saarland, Germany. He emigrated to Chicago, IL at the age of 21 before joining the US Army and serving in Korea.

 

He had a successful career in graphic and display design in the shoe industry, most notably working as the creative director of Florsheim Shoes for many years before starting his own design firm. He enjoyed photography and painting and was always studying a new topic of interest.

 

He was a truly gentle man, loved by all who knew him. He was infinitely curious and creative until his final days, and saw beauty and uniqueness all around him.

Gunter is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann (nee Golden); four children, Andrew, Claudia, Maggie, and Katy; son-in-law, Casey Epton; brother, Alex (Liz) Ifkowitsch; sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy (Mark) Tucker, Maureen Howell, Joan Sabbia, Bill (Nancy) Golden, Robert (Mary) Golden. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Alberts; sisters, Giselle Purves, and Pia Ifkowitsch; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Norine Golden; sister-in-law, Lucette Alberts, brothers-in-law, Joe Purves, John Sabbia, and Jonathan Howell.

 

A Visitation for Gunter will be held at 1pm on Saturday, October 28, 2023, followed by a Funeral Mass at 2:30pm, at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Clarendon Hills, with Fr. Robert Oldershaw officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gunter’s name to Misericordia Home, 6300 N. Ridge Ave, Chicago, IL 60660.
